Annotated Classic The Molecular Basis for Odor Recognition

چکیده
We are pleased to present a series of Annotated Classics celebrating 40 years of exciting biology in the pages of Cell. This installment revisits “A Novel Multigene Family May Encode Odorant Receptors: A Molecular Basis for Odor Recognition” by Linda Buck and Richard Axel. Here, Stuart Firestein, Charles Greer, and Peter Mombaerts comment on many discoveries foreshadowed by the identification of odorant receptors as GPCRs, the technical challenges for working with them, and as yet unanswered questions in the field.

Molecularly Imprinted Filtering Adsorbents for Odor Sensing
Versatile odor sensors that can discriminate among huge numbers of environmental odorants are desired in many fields, including robotics, environmental monitoring, and food production. However, odor sensors comparable to an animal's nose have not yet been developed. An animal's olfactory system recognizes odor clusters with specific molecular properties and uses this combinatorial information i...
متن کاملOdor detection and recognition with Support Vector Machines
Pattern recognition techniques have widely been used in the context of odor recognition. The recognition of mixtures and simple odors as separate clusters is an untractable problem with some of the classical supervised methods. Recently a new paradigm has been introduced in which the detection problem can be seen as a learning from examples problem. In this paper we investigate odor recognition...

We are pleased to present a series of Annotated Classics celebrating 40 years of exciting biology in the pages of Cell. This installment revisits “Recognition of Commensal Microflora by Toll-like Receptors Is Required for Intestinal Homeostasis” from the Medzhitov lab. Here, Sarkis Mazmanian comments on how Rakoff-Nahoum et al. demonstrated that Toll-like receptors not only recognize ligands fr...
متن کاملThe cellular and molecular basis of odor adaptation.
An important recent advance in the understanding of odor adaptation has come from the discovery that complex mechanisms of odor adaptation already take place at the earliest stage of the olfactory system, in the olfactory cilia. At least two rapid forms and one persistent form of odor adaptation coexist in vertebrate olfactory receptor neurons. These three different adaptation phenomena can be ...
متن کاملMolecular phylogeny and morphology of four Ramularia species from Iran along with a checklist of ramularia-like taxa
The genus Ramularia includes important plant pathogens with worldwide distribution, commonly associated with leaf spot diseases on a broad range of plant hosts. Although these fungi are common in Iran, most of the species found to date have been identified on the basis of morphological characteristics, and DNA data are available for limited number of them. During our investigation of fungi asso...
